Microsoft to Close the Xbox 360 Store

After almost two decades since its debut, the Xbox 360 is reaching another milestone. Launched in 2005, the Xbox 360 led the way before the release of its successor, the Xbox One, in 2013. Later, the Xbox Series X and Series S were introduced in 2020. Even with these newer models, the enduring Xbox 360 has maintained its popularity and its online store—until now.

Microsoft recently revealed that the Xbox 360’s digital store, known as the Xbox Games Store, will discontinue new purchases after July 29th, 2024. From that date forward, users won’t be able to buy fresh games or DLCs, with access restricted to their existing online library. Additionally, the Microsoft Movies & TV app on the Xbox 360 will also cease operations on the same day.

However, Microsoft emphasizes that this decision isn’t a death sentence for the console. Xbox 360 owners will still retain access to games previously bought on the device and can re-download them whenever needed. The main change? The inability to make new game and content purchases.

Backwards compatibility ensures that Xbox 360 games can still be purchased on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S via the Microsoft Store. This primarily impacts users who rely exclusively on the original console. Unfortunately, games that aren’t suitable for backwards compatibility or those only available digitally (like some Xbox Live Arcade indie games) might become inaccessible for those who missed purchasing them. The only alternatives to acquire them might be through modifications or emulation.

While the closure won’t affect online gameplay on the Xbox 360, there’s a caveat. While Xbox 360 online services will remain active, locating an operational server for certain games could be challenging.

For Xbox 360 owners eyeing specific titles, it’s advisable to secure them before next year’s deadline. There’s ample time to enjoy them to the fullest.
