Tangerine Telecom, a provider of NBN and mobile services, recently announced a data breach affecting roughly 232,000 current and former customers. The company acknowledged the “unauthorized disclosure of certain personal information” on Sunday, February 18th, 2024.

The breach reportedly stemmed from a security lapse involving a contractor. An unauthorized individual gained access to a “legacy” customer database by exploiting compromised credentials provided to the contractor. This database contained personal information dating back to June 2019, including names, birth dates, contact details, and account numbers.

Tangerine Telecom emphasizes that no financial information, such as credit card details, was compromised. They also state that all affected customers have been notified of the incident.

CEO Andrew Branson expressed deep regret and assured customers that steps are being taken to strengthen security measures and prevent similar incidents in the future. The company is currently investigating the breach and working with authorities.
